CIA Drug Running & Drug Experimentation
The CIA's involvement in narcotics trafficking got started with its predecessor, the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and the deals it made with mobster Lucky Luciano. In exchange for Luciano's help in the allied invasion of Sicily, the OSS turned a blind eye to Luciano's heroin trafficking from Sicily to Marseilles and then worldwide.
In the 1950s, the CIA dispatched agents to Sandoz Laboratories in Switzerland and bought the entire world's supply of LSD, ten pounds of it, so the Soviets would not get their hands on it. They proceeded to test LSD's effectiveness as a weapon on unsuspecting individuals, as well as sponsoring LSD programs in which the public could participate.
During the Vietnam war, the CIA enlisted the help of Montagnard tribes to fight against the Viet Cong, in exchange for which they used their own air force, Air America, to transport Montagnard opium, the mainstay of their economy. The result was the plague of cheap and deadly heroin that flooded America in the late 1960s.
In the 80s the CIA was involved in illegal activities involving selling weapons to Iran, America's enemy at the time, to fund illegal paramilitaries in Central America. With cocaine being abundant, the CIA smuggled tons of crack into the US and started the crack pandemic, with Los Angeles bearing the brunt. A CIA rendition plane crashed with 4 tons of cocaine in it.
Gary Webb, a journalist for the San Jose mercury news, investigated the crack epidemic and wrote "Dark Alliance" about the CIA and crack. He was harrassed and committed suicide by shooting himself twice in the back of his head.
Along comes the Afghanistan War. The CIA was once again in the heroin business and Americans were dropping dead in the streets from CIA heroin.
